Waste

WEcan

For several years Environment Canterbury has promoted internal waste minimisation initiatives such as:

  • providing paper, cardboard, glass and aluminium recycling,
  • a staff waste exchange,
  • information on how to reduce paper use,
  • intranet copies of yellow and white pages.

Environment Canterbury waste binsIn April 2002, the WEcan project was launched. Based on an initiative established by the Timaru District Council, this project has involved diverting all compostable waste from landfill by providing staff with small containers for their food scraps and tissues.

This waste is then composted in worm farms set up in office car-park gardens. In addition, rubbish bins were removed from all offices, and replaced with paper recycling bins and centralised recycling drop-off points for non-paper recyclables.
