  • Proposed Additions to South Canterbury Groundwater Allocation Zones (Report No. R08/42 - August 2008)
The South Canterbury area from Timaru to the Waitaki River is currently divided into a number of groundwater allocation zones in the Proposed Natural Resources Regional Plan (PNRRP). These include the following: Pareora, Otaio, Makikihi, Hook, Waimate, Waihao, and Whitneys Creek. Groundwater abstractions are becoming more common in the Cannington Basin (inland Pareora River) and Timaru areas, which are not currently covered by a groundwater allocation zone. This report discusses the options for groundwater allocation, and recommends the creation of two new groundwater allocation zones: Cannington Basin and Timaru. Changes to the existing Pareora groundwater allocation zone are also recommended.

  • Ecosystem health of Canterbury rivers: Development and implementation of biotic and habitat assessment methods 1999/2000 (Report R03/03)
This report describes the development and first year's implementation of a monitoring programme designed to monitor the health of aquatic ecosystems of wadable rivers and streams throughout the Canterbury region. The programme had the over-all objective of assessing the current state of health or integrity of rivers by assessing both the biotic and physical conditions of a representative range of river and stream reaches. Methods adopted loosely followed that of the US EPA rapid bioassessment protocols (RBPs) to generate indices of biotic integrity (IBI). As the first report of a major new monitoring programme it discusses at length a range of monitoring concepts and requirements for the programme, detailed methods, and additional analysis to validate the methods.

  • Addendum to U06 08 and U06 10 Since completing Environment Canterbury Reports U06/08 (Davey 2006a) and U06/10 (Davey 2006b) I have been advised that my description of the formation and characteristics of aquifers and aquitards has been misunderstood and/or misinterpreted. This Addendum responds to those concerns and at the same time provides updated versions of two schematic cross-sections which contained printing errors in some print runs of the U06/10 report.

  • Canterbury Strategic Water Study (Report 4557/1)
The Canterbury Strategic Water Study provides information on the potential long-term requirement for water, the capacity of the region to meet those requirements, the water resources that would come under the most stress and the reliability over the long-term of water supplied from natural systems for abstractive uses.

  • Dairy Effluent Report This report is a summary of Environment Canterbury’s findings on the extent of compliance with conditions regulating dairy shed effluent discharges. More importantly, the report provides Environment Canterbury and industry stakeholders with a platform for increasing compliance.

  • Groundwater Allocation for the Waipara Groundwater Zone Revision 1 U05/87
Utilisation of the groundwater resources in the Waipara basin is rapidly increasing as irrigators search for a reliable supply of water to sustain viticultural and horticultural developments.  It is necessary to manage the groundwater resource in order to protect existing users and to manage the effects of existing and future takes.

  • Hurunui River Management Regime
The Hurunui River is coming under increasing pressure for abstraction, particularly for expanding dairy farm irrigation. Given the demand, and the potential for adverse effects on instream values, Environment Canterbury (ECan) is reviewing the existing flow regimes for the mainstem and tributaries.

  • Instream and Recreation Values
Environment Canterbury has prepared a series of reports and databases on the instream and recreation values within the rivers and lakes of the Canterbury region. The purpose of these reports and databases was to bring together into one place information that was dispersed through published and unpublished literature, and files or knowledge held by individuals.

  • Pareora - Waihao Water Resource Summary R06/20
The purpose of this study is to quantify the surface and groundwater resources of the region with the aim of providing information to assist in the implementation of the Natural Resources Regional Plan (NRRP) for the region.

  • Pareora Waihao Allocation Review

This report redefines the Groundwater Allocation Zone boundaries based on geology and major surface water catchments across the South Canterbury downlands area. The area covers the coastal downs south from Timaru to the Waitaki River Catchment boundary and inland to the Hunter Hills. This review has led to adjustments in the areas of land-surface recharge capture. Additionally, three new zones have replaced the Waihao-Wainono groundwater allocation zone.

  • Rangitata River Water Conservation Order The Water Conservation (Rangitata River) Order came into force on 21st July 2006. Its purpose is to protect the outstanding character and features of the Rangitata River through retaining the quality, quantity, level and rate of flow of the waters specified in Schedule 1, as far as possible in their natural state.

  • Schedule WQN9 Documentation
Environment Canterbury has had irrigation consultants review the standards for peak and seasonal irrigation demand in Schedule WQN9, Chapter 5, of the proposed Natural Resource Regional Plan [NRRP].

Canterbury Strategic Water Study Part 3 - Public Consultation 2008

Stage 3 of the Canterbury Strategic Water Study (CSWS) was a preliminary stakeholder assessment of a range of water storage options for Canterbury (options identified previously in Stage 2 of the CSWS).

CSWS Stage 3 is part of a broader consideration of water availability and management. The report and public response to it will contribute to the comprehensive public engagement programme on Canterbury water management planned for 2008/09.

The key findings of CSWS Stage 3 are that - before strategic water storage and water management decisions can be made - rigorous scientific and public consideration is required of:

    • the impacts of land use intensification and its effects on water quality
    • mitigation and management systems for water quality, and
    • methods for maintaining or improving flow variability and low flows in major rivers.

  • Waimakariri River Regional Plan (Report R04/7)
The purpose of this Plan is to promote the sustainable management of rivers, lakes and hydraulically connected groundwater, and river and lake beds in the Waimakariri River Catchment; to maintain and enhance the environment; and to achieve integrated management of these resources.

  • Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan
Following an agreement between parties involved in an appeal to the High Court to reword some of the rules in the Plan, the way has been cleared for the Waitaki Catchment Water Allocation Regional Plan to become operative with immediate effect.
