The Transport Planning section is responsible for ensuring that the Council complies with its statutory transport responsibilities, which includes preparing a Regional Land Transport Strategy and a Regional Land Transport Programme through the Regional Transport Committee.
It is the Transport Planning team’s role to ensure that the Committee receives good advice and administration, including support to ensure the integration of regional planning with local planning. The Transport Planning team is also responsible for ensuring the Council’s tasks identified in these documents are completed, and also ensures that the Committee complies with its role to monitor and report on wider implementation across the region.
The Transport Planning team also undertakes long-term public transport planning for the future development of the Metro public transport networks and works closely with the Passenger Services section to ensure Council and central Government investment in public transport is used in the most effective way. Typically this is achieved through close liaison with local councils and communities in the development and implementation of Metro strategies for the Greater Christchurch and Timaru areas, and through the development of region-wide Regional Public Transport Plans.
