Environment Canterbury appointed Hearing Commissioners to convene the hearing to allow the applicants and submitters who requested to be heard in support of their written submission to provide more detail on their submissions. The hearing gives the hearing panel the opportunity to ask questions.
Environment Canterbury Hearing Commissioners recommended the Minister for the Environment grant the application following a period of consultation. This recommendation was adopted by by Environment Canterbury Commissioners at a special meeting in July 2011 and will now be referred to the Minister for the Environment for a final decision. The Minister will make the final decision on the amendments to National Water Conservation (Lake Ellesmere) Order 1990. The only appeal allowed under the Environment Canterbury Act is to the High Court on points of law. Appeals to the Environment Court have been removed by the Act.
