On the 18th of January 2011 an application lodged by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation for amendments to the National Water Conservation (Lake Ellesmere) Order 1990 was publicly notified by Environment Canterbury with the submission period closing on Friday 11 February 2011.
As part of this process, submitters could request a preference that the application preserve a different but related water body in the same catchment, or preserve different features and qualities of the water body. Some submissions have included preferences and the Commissioners who will be hearing the application have directed that the preferences requested in these submissions be publicly notified to allow for the public to provide comment on these additional preferences.

The Submission process
Your submission must be received by Environment Canterbury by 5 pm Friday 27th May 2011.
Further submissions must include all the information listed below and please remember to sign your further submission:
- That the further submission is in relation to the Application to Amended the National Water Conservation (Lake Ellesmere ) Order 1990;
- Your name, address and telephone number. If you wish to be contacted by email, please also include this address;
- Your submitter ID if you have previously submitted on this application (this is included at the start of the letter of notification of submission preferences);
- The name of the submitter to which your further submission relates and the preferences sought;
- Whether you support or oppose the preferences and the reasons why;
- The decision you want the Canterbury Regional Council to make to grant or decline the preference(s) sought; and
- Whether you wish to be heard in support of your submission.
