The Waihao River - Wainono Lagoon Management Strategy will guide the Waihao-Wainono Water Users Society in its management of the Waihao – Wainono Catchment but will rely on the goodwill, participation and commitment of individuals, communities, and organisations (both governmental and non-governmental) to carry out the actions that will achieve the Strategy’s goals.
The Strategy:
- Sets out clear goals and detailed actions for the future management of the land and river system.
- Aims to increase public awareness and understanding of the whole waterway system.
- Aims to encourage communities, organisations and institutions to improve the ecological, recreational and economic values of the area.
- Is non-statutory, that is, it has no legal standing and therefore cannot be enforced.
- Is a “living document” in that it is regularly reviewed and updated as new information and new insights become available.
Area under consideration
This management strategy covers the area of the Waihao River (north and south branches) and all of its subcatchments, including the Wainono Lagoon. The main tributaries considered in the catchment include Sinclairs Creek, Buchanans Creek, Sir Charles Creek, Waimate Creek, Waituna Stream, and Hook River and Stream.
