Some Canterbury towns experience poor air quality during winter, mostly caused by air pollution from home heating. Of the towns and cities that are monitored, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Ashburton and Timaru do not currently meet the health-based National Environmental Standard for air quality.
