Ashburton, Christchurch, Rangiora and Kaiapoi all have a rule that provides an exemption that allows home owners to use their old woodburners and open fires in emergency power outage situations.
An emergency power outage is defined as one where there is notice of cessation of the electricity supply and the electricity supply is unavailable for more than 3 hours, or in the event there is cessation of electricity supply and the length of the outage is not known at the time of the cessation. These rules do not apply if the electricity supply is discontinued due to non-payment.
