Environment Canterbury river engineers are responsible for

• managing the Council's 63 catchment rating districts.
• managing river gravel resources 
• flood control structures
• removing weeds in rivers within rating districts using Dragline, excavator, and weed cutter boat.  
• environmental enhancement work within rating districts, such as planting native plants, protection of wetlands, riparian buffers, vegetation control for river nesting birds, channel enhancement for fishing values.
• the telemetry system    

           -           measure rainfall

           -           what size flood

           -           warning time

• a quarry at View Hill
• they can also work with communities to set up rating districts to reduce impact of river behaviour.
