Depending on the type of vegetation to be burnt, and the location, the following times apply to burning vegetation in the hill and high country in Canterbury:
1. For the coastal hill areas from Waipara to Kekerengu and for Banks Peninsula the burn season starts on the 1st June and finishes on the 31st October;
2. For all other areas of hill and high country, the burning season starts on 1st July and finishes on the 31st October;
3. Areas of bracken fern may be burnt from 1st June through to the 31st October.
If your burning complies with all the conditions for a permitted activity (please refer to our
Hill and High Country Fires page to view these conditions), then you will not need a resource consent but you will need to notify Environment Canterbury with details of your intended burn.
The information to be provided when notifying Environment Canterbury will depend on the reason(s) you are burning. Please complete the Hill and High Country Notification of Intention to Burn form and send it to
ecinfo@ecan.govt.nz to be assessed.
You will receive a response from Environment Canterbury to either confirm that your intended burn meets the permitted activity criteria or that a resource consent needs to be applied for.
